A REVIEW ON COMPARISION OF MIFEPRISTONE AND LEVENORGESTROL USED AS EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES

This study aims to assess the comparison of mifepristone and levonorgestrol in termination of pregnancy. The antiprogestin mifepristone has shown potential to be used as a abortion pill. If 200 mg mifepristone is administered instantaneously after ovulation, the endometrium shows enough impairment of secretory growth to avoid implantation. Low daily doses of mifepristone have been shown to lessen several of the local factors that are important for implantation in human endometrium. Few studies looked at levonorgestrel`s mechanisms of action in postcoital contraception proposed that it may affect both follicle growth and development of the corpus luteum. Comparative research study between combination of estrogen+progestogen and levonorgestrol showed levonorgestrol is well tolerated than this combination and comparative study between mifepristone and high dose estrogen and progestogen revealed mifepristone is more effective but major drawback is delay of next menstrual period which is stressful for women. Mifepristone and misoprostol are used in combination for effective contraception.
