Prophylaxis, Antibiotics, Orthopaedic surgery. ,

Objective: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the use of surgical prophylactic antibiotics in orthopaedic department according to WHO guidelines. Study design: An observational and prospective study was conducted in 200 patients of orthopaedic department for a period of 6 months. Basic demographic data, laboratory investigations and details of prophylactic antibiotics being prescribed were collected from the patient’s case sheets. A descriptive analysis was carried out on the data collected. Result: Out of 200 cases, 69.5% of the pre-operative antibiotics prescribed were according to the WHO guidelines. Conclusion: A significant proportion of prescriptions followed the WHO guidelines, but still there is a need to emphasize more on the antibiotic prescribing patterns to prevent antibiotic resistance.
