Inflammation is a localised physical condition in which a portion of the body becomes reddish, swollen, heated, and frequently painful in response to an injury or illness. Inflammation is caused by the immune system being activated in response to a variety of stressors. With cellular and humoral components, the immune system is a highly sophisticated and evolutionarily honed defence mechanism. There are several synthetic medications available to efficiently treat inflammation and associated symptoms, but they are not necessarily without adverse effects. Despite a lack of understanding regarding herbals' pharmacological efficacies and safety, sales of both proven and untested medicines are increasing.
