ANTIHYERLIPIDEMIC ACTIVITY OF FAGONIA CRETICA L. WHOLE PLANT

Antihyperlipidemic activity of aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica L. (Zygophyllaceae) whole plant was evaluated in male Wistar albino rats. After induced hyperlipidaemia by high fat diet, the aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica L. 250 & 500mg/kg (AEFC) and standard drug atorvastatin were administered orally to different group of rats for two times at an interval of 12 hours and continued for 15 days. After termination of the study, all group animals were sacrificed and lipid profile such as Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and High Density Lipoproteins was estimated. High fat diet showed significant increase in LDL, TG, TC and a significant decrease in HDL in serum. The aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica L. and atorvastatin treated groups showed significantly increased HDL levels and decreased TC, TG and HDL-LDL ratio. The Aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica L. has showed significant antihyperlipidemic activity
